Hidden treasure: Walled gardens are secluded, romantic and highly desirable

There is an air of mystery about a house where the garden lies behind walls, a private world hidden from outsiders and experienced only by a privileged few.
Childhood fantasies have grown around them, of course, not least via Frances hodgson Burnett's children's classic, The Secret Garden, while romantic writers and artists have seen walled gardens as the natural domain for lovers' trysts and even Cupid.
David and Lesley Roberts were smitten by a walled garden in 1999 when they first saw Woodfall Cottage, their three-bedroom home near Whithorn, in Dumfries & Galloway.
